Sound familiar?

Wet clay and coastal storms tear up driveways that were built too thin.

  • Water sits in low spots for days after rain, and the top slowly turns into a web of cracks.
  • Long farm drives in Colts Neck rut and sag where trucks and horse trailers turn around.
  • Wind, sun and salt fade the asphalt to gray and pit it, so it looks old after a few seasons.

Local conditions

Greensand hills inland, loose sand at the shore

Monmouth County sits on the inner coastal plain. Through the Colts Neck, Holmdel and Marlboro belt, the ground is greensand marl and clayey loam that drains slowly and stays wet after rain. Closer to the ocean the soil turns sandy, which drains fast but slides under weight. The Navesink, Shrewsbury and Manasquan rivers, the Swimming River Reservoir and nor'easters off the Atlantic all mean one thing for a driveway here: water is the main enemy.

What we see most in Monmouth County

Soft, wet base

Clay that holds rain lets the stone underneath pump and sink, so cracks show up in the tire paths first.

Birdbath puddles

Flat spots hold water after every storm, and each freeze opens the surface a little wider.

Salt and sun wear

Near the beach the top layer dries out, turns gray and starts to shed loose stones.

Crushed edges on long drives

Trucks, trailers and mowers roll off the side of narrow estate drives and break the unsupported edge.

The solution

A Driveway Built From the Ground Up for Monmouth Soil

We get it. You paid for a driveway once, and it did not last.

Maybe it looked great for a year. Then the puddles came back, the cracks spread and the edges began to break off. That is not bad luck. In much of this area the ground holds water, and asphalt laid over a thin base moves right along with it. You deserve a crew that fixes the cause, not just the surface.

Gallagher and Sons Paving has been in business for 61 years. Our grandfather started the company, and four generations of our family have learned this trade on the job. Owner Patrick Gallagher runs a licensed and insured crew, and we put a 3-year guarantee on our workmanship and materials.

We dig out soft soil, build a firm, graded base and pitch the new asphalt so water runs off and away. You get a driveway you can finally stop worrying about.

Benefits

What you get

Water Goes Where It Should

Grading and pitch set on site

We shape the base so rain runs to the lawn or the gutter, not toward your garage or down into the stone.

A Base That Won't Pump

Excavation and compacted stone

Soggy clay squeezes up through thin stone. We remove the soft layer and build back with packed stone set to your soil.

A Finish That Fits the Home

Clean edges and tight seams

Crisp lines at the garage and street and a deep black top that suits a colonial, a farmhouse or a beach cottage.

How it works

3 simple steps

  1. Step 1

    Ask for your free estimate

Call or fill out the form. We set a time to walk the property, watch how water moves and look at the ground.

  2. Step 2

    We rebuild it right

Our crew lifts the old surface, fixes soft spots, grades the stone base and lays fresh hot asphalt, then rolls it tight.

  3. Step 3

    Pull in on solid ground

You come home to a dark, even driveway that drains well, with a written 3-year guarantee behind it.

Our recommendation

If your driveway is worn out, do not just add a new layer on top. On clay, that buries the problem and it comes back. Have us check the base first. If it is sound, an overlay may be all you need. If it is soft, a full rebuild is the fix that lasts. Near the shore, plan on regular sealcoating to keep salt and sun off the surface.

FAQ

Monmouth County questions

Still have questions? Call (908) 720-2444. We pick up.

Why do driveways crack so fast in Colts Neck and Holmdel?+

Much of that area sits on greensand and clay that hold water. When the base stays wet it shifts, and the asphalt on top cracks. We dig out soft spots and build a stronger stone base where the soil calls for it.

Can you pave a long estate or horse farm driveway?+

Yes. Long drives are a big part of our work in this county. We plan the grade so water leaves the drive, and we set the base to carry trucks, trailers and farm equipment.

Do shore homes in Belmar and Sea Girt need anything different?+

Sun, salt and wind dry out the top of the asphalt over time. Sealcoating keeps it dark and keeps water out. Many of those driveways are also narrow, so we bring the right size equipment and work clean.

My street near the Shrewsbury River floods. Can a new driveway help?+

Often, yes. We look at where the water comes from and pitch the new surface away from the house. We cannot stop a flood, but we can help your driveway drain fast and dry out sooner.

Do you also work in Freehold, Manalapan and Millstone?+

Yes. We pave all over the county, from the western farm towns out to the coast. Estimates are always free, and we will tell you plainly what your driveway needs.
